大雜院中來自外省與本省的居民互相扶持，拾荒者石三泰對孤女小珠疼愛有加，雖然生活貧困，但兩人感情深厚，情同親生父女，過著甜蜜滿足的生活。本片為李行導演首次執導的國語電影，也是後來「健康寫實」電影風潮的先驅，片中每一個小人物都充滿了寫實的刻畫，而當時淳樸熱心的市井小民，就如影片中一般在街頭巷尾過著互助勤勉的簡單生活。

The story is about the people support each other in a slum. The garbage man, Shi San Tai, cares for an orphan , Xiao Zhu. Though both live in poverty, they are close to each other and lead a pleasant life. This is first mandarin film directed by Lee Hsing and a forerunner of the later “Healthy Realism.”
